NEWS RELEASE April 18, 2013 — CHEO Foundation and Merivale High School Celebrate 2013 CHEO Telethon logo

Ottawa – The 2013 CHEO Telethon campaign is officially underway after a ceremony this morning at Merivale High School. Merivale High School student Jenny Berndt’s original design will be featured on all telethon materials, including the CHEO Foundation’s Bear Wear clothing line. The official Wear Your Bear Day Launch also included a fashion show of this year’s royal blue collection featuring youth and adult t-shirts, women’s full zip hooded sweatshirts in white, men’s full zip hooded sweatshirts in navy, adult crew neck sweatshirts, men’s and women’s 100% cotton golf shirts, caps, and a CHEO plush bear with t-shirt.

CTV’s Carol Anne Meehan was on hand and announced that June 7th will be “Wear Your Bear Day.” Everyone is encouraged to wear telethon clothing that day to remind others of the broadcast on June 8th and 9th. Bear Wear merchandise can be purchased at Walmart and Costco locations, the CHEO Foundation, and online at www.cheofoundation.com.

Carol Anne Meehan congratulated Jenny on stage where she received a framed copy of her original poster design. As part of the logo competition, Bell Canada donated a $1,000 bursary to the school. Sandy Clement, Regional Director of Community Affairs at Bell was on hand to present the cheque as well as a congratulatory gift to Jenny.

Mayor Jim Watson was on hand and spoke about the important role CHEO plays in our community and the importance of healthy active children in our region. He also congratulated Merivale High for their talent, creativity and great community spirit.

Every year the logo competition is open to area schools and hundreds of submissions flood in. Students of all ages are asked to create a design they feel best portrays what CHEO means.

The CHEO Telethon will be broadcast on CTV, on June 8th and 9th. Proceeds will help CHEO purchase specialized medical equipment and conduct life-saving research in areas such as youth mental health and childhood obesity. Telethon funds will also help us improve the pediatric nature of the hospital by purchasing games, toys and crafts to make a patients stay at CHEO as comfortable as possible. Please tune in to show your support of your local children’s hospital.

Merivale's Art Department submitted 52 student works to the YOUNG at ART jury for possible inclusion in their annual art show at Ben Franklin Place in May.

Should you receive an email or phone call from the City of Ottawa about the competition, please understand that it is a juried show and not all our entries will make it through. Merivale Fine Arts will be assuming the cost of the framing and entrance fees and will also supervise pickup and delivery of all artwork.

Dave Erickson (Eric's dad) has kindly shared this link. Olivia Chow has thanked our school on her website and on Facebook for the Jack Layton stamp project our graphic design students completed in 2011-12. Dave's oldest son was an NDP candidate in the last election.
