LASER CERTIFICATION
On June 13, Merivale Communication and Design FOCUS/SHSM students completed a certification workshop at the Centrepointe Library. Each student had the chance to laser etch his/her Adobe Illustrator vector design into a masonite panel. Files were prepared in our Mac Lab, flight checked for possible errors, and then taken to the Centrepointe Library for imaging. This workshop completes the cycle of at least three compulsory sector related certifications needed by all SHSM students.

OFFSET LITHOGRAPHY WORKSHOP @ TRICO EVOLUTION

On May 19, Merivale Communication and Design FOCUS/SHSM class saw a hockey poster they created in class printed by offset lithography at Trico Evolution. Every student contributed several images to the poster which celebrates hockey in Canada, in our country's 150th birthday and also the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Hockey League.
If you look closely, several Merivale hockey legends are included in the poster, as well as hockey Trivia expert Liam Maguire. All the mayors of Canadian cities with NHL teams also contributed a photo to the final project. Many thanks to Spencer Courteau for his careful art direction, and to Jonathan Stokes at Trico who facilitated this experiential learning opportunity for our class.

STEEL PANS at the AIRPORT for the JUNOS!

Airport Steel Pans.JPGwebsite airport2.JPG

Ms. Watson-Laird and the Steel Pan ensemble raised the roof at Ottawa's International Airport on March 31 as part of the JUNO AWARDS WEEKEND in the Nation's Capital. Their performance was recorded by one of the official JUNO bloggers.
Many people in transit stopped to listen to the group and took note that it was a Merivale High School initiative!

ITALY 2017
Mr. Osterer accompanied Ms. Watson-Laird, Mr. Stratton, Mr. Hicks and Ms. Frouin on the March Break to Italy. We were able to see famous Renaissance works of art by Michaelangelo, Raphael, Da Vinci, Boticelli as well as many Roman antiquities.

In March 2019, Merivale is planning a cultural trip to Northern Europe.
Contact Ms. Watson-Laird for more details.

CBC Canadian Music Challenge @ MERIVALE !!!!!!!!

music class challenge.jpg

Our grade 11/12 instrumental music class performed We’re Here for a Good Time by Trooper for the CBC Canadian Music Challenge. We chose to showcase all the different musical talents within our class by including a variety of instruments. Our school is home to the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s only steel pan program and so we featured the steel pan as a solo instrument and also added a lyrical introduction. And on November 16, our entry was featured on CBC LIVE!

Congratulations to Ms. Dutton and all the terrific Merivale students that took part!

On February 4, 100 strong Merivale and Sir Winston Churchill students and teachers cheered our OTTAWA SENATORS at the Canadian Tire Centre. Merivale's steel pan club under the direction of Naomi Watson-Laird entertained fans with a medley of popular tunes — including the Hockey Night in Canada theme song. OCDSB superintendent Neil Yorke-Slader, Sir Winston Churchill principal Aisling O'Donnell and former Sir Win principal Dave Hogg took part in the festivities.

Many thanks to —

• Merivale principal Barb Gage, VP Tim Hawes and Merivale Office administrator Barb Dettmar for facilitating this event;
Jade Fair, Account Manager – Group Sales with the Ottawa Senators;
• Ottawa realtor Paul Rushforth for providing the van to transport our steel drums;
Richard Watson-Laird for driving the van on his birthday!
• and to volunteer and former SRB parent council member Neil Blacher for the great photos.

It was a night to remember — except for the final score.

We were asked by Zone3Sports to design a promotion poster for their upcoming Triathlon. The winning design would be featured on posters around Ottawa as well as on T-shirts that participants will be wearing. Mr. Hughes' Communications Technology took on this task and Rawan Saadi's design was chosen as the winner! Representatives from the company came to present Rawan with her winning cheque!
